From May 21st to 25th, 3GPP held the final meeting of the 3GPP working group to complete the first phase of 5G standard setting in Busan, South Korea. The conference will determine the full content of the 3GPP R15 standard and also marks the completion of the first commercialization of 5G.
It is reported that this meeting focused on the content of the RAN working group and summarized the contents of the RAN 1-5 working group to determine the final technology for commercialization of 5G. These include ultra-high-speed data and ultra-low-latency 5G wireless access technologies and conformance testing methods for 5G terminals.
In order to ensure that the 5G SA standard was completed on time in June this year, as early as February of this year, China Mobile initiated a “5G SA breakthrough” with partners such as Datang Telecom, Ericsson, Huawei, Intel, Nokia Bell, and ZTE. In the aspect of 5G standard formulation, product promotion, and performance improvement, three major goals were put forward: Strive to complete the first version of the 5G SA standard with partners in the industry in accordance with the plan in June 2018; to realize the comprehensive functions of the service core network products and to realize the difference. Interoperability between manufacturers; further breakthrough in the performance of the 5G core network.
According to reports, the participants in this conference were unprecedentedly large, including the Japan Radio Industry and Business Confederation (ARIB), the China Communications Standards Association (CCSA), the American Telecommunication Industry Solutions Alliance (ATIS), and the Japan Telecom Technology Commission (TTC). The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), the Telecommunication Standards Development Association of India (TSDSI) and the Korea Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) also come from chipset, mobile phone and equipment suppliers, including Samsung, Qualcomm, Verizon, AT&T, NTT DoCoMo, etc. About 1,500 standard experts, including major mobile operators, will attend the conference.
According to Samsung participating in the conference, this meeting is the first commercialization standard forming conference for 5G. Basically, all manufacturers and organizations related to this standard will participate in the conference. The meeting mainly focused on the contents of the RAN working group and summarized the contents of the RAN 1-5 working group to determine the final technology for commercialization of 5G. These include ultra-high-speed data and ultra-low-latency 5G wireless access technologies and conformance testing methods for 5G terminals.
The meeting will also determine the conformance testing method for 5G terminals. At the same time, the 3GPP RAN4 working group will also determine the RF performance requirements for 5G base stations and 5G terminals in the 3.5GHz and 28GHz frequency bands.
The industry believes that with the official completion of the 5G SA standard, it is only a year and a half away from the official commercial use of 5G SA in China. For domestic operating companies and related industrial chains, the time is heavy and the challenges are even greater.
