Juniper hopes to be the first vendor to offer 400GbE in the routing and switching portfolio. Juniper said it plans to offer 400GbE functionality in its PTX IP Transport Series, QFX Data Center Series and MX WAN Series, with updates expected in the second half of 2018 and the first half of 2019.
Juniper CTO Bikash Koley said that the demand for 400 Gigabit Ethernet is driven by the need for more cost-effective packet transmission to meet the growing bandwidth demands of video; to handle communication between data centers and data centers; And prepare for 5G.
“Upgrading from 100 Gig to 400 Gig is the best way to achieve better economics,” says Koley. “We saw demand from very large merchants, enterprise and service provider customers, network cores and edges, and data centers. It’s worth noting that this is not just 400 Gig, but also includes a scale-out architecture. 400 Gig Scale-out is what our customers are looking for."
Juniper CEO Rami Rahim has been emphasizing the slogan of "scale-out architecture" in several recent earnings conference calls. He said that Juniper's revenue is facing a temporary impact as customers move from a vertically scaled architecture to a scale-out architecture.
Koley explained that if you add capacity to the scale-up architecture, customers need to add line cards or buy larger chassis. With a scale-out architecture, customers can deploy more routers and scale out more cost-effectively.
First 400 Gigabit
In a recent conference call with investors, Arista CEO Jayshree Ullal said, “400 Gig is very important in some use cases, you can look forward to Arista's efforts. 400 Gig has become a mainstream market for many years, I believe the original The trial will begin in 2019, but the mainstream market will be even later."
Koley said: "I believe we will be the first to enter the market with 400 Gig."
For three product lines, Juniper is introducing new chips: the ExpressPlus chip for the PTX series, the QF chip for the QFX series, and the Penta chip for the MX series.
"The 2018 marks the beginning of the commercial 400G market, and as the 400G trial of WDM, service provider routing and data center switching applications shifts to production deployments, sales will increase in 2019," said Matthias Machowinski, senior research director at IHS Markit. "We expect to invest $10 billion in 400G technology over the next five years."
